It’s Cool To Be Kind

Sunday, June 22nd, 2008

By Ed Horrell I speak professionally to business people on the power of kindness. In business today, with all of the fear, negativity, and indifference in the marketplace, businesses are finding that values-based leadership makes an extremely positive difference in the workplace. Do our children feel this way? Can it be cool to be kind? I have two adult children whom I love. They are my best friends. They are kind people. I also have two step-children. They are what motivate me to do what I do. I adore them and they are kind people. I worry about their well-being but I never worry about their values. They are values-driven, kind kids. What I DO worry about, however, are the kids that are being taught that kindness isnt cool, that nice guys finish last, that being kind equals being a wimp. I am afraid that too many of our childrens role models are tough talking athletes, TV, and movie celebrities that are great entertainment but poor examples of the power of kindness. I want to make this as clear as I can. It is time for kindness in every aspect of our livesat home, in business, in society. There is enough tough guy posturing in politics, sports, and business to go around. We as parents need to start letting our children know that it is cool to be kind. I think there are some things we can do as parents of these easily influenced girls and boys to help them make their decisions towards kindness. Here are some suggestions: 1) Stop trashing the teachers. They are not perfect; theyve got their own issues. Rather than take it out with the kids, why not practice some patience (and kindness) with a private, calm meeting to determine how Charles can do better in class. Charles teacher is going to appreciate some calm in a very tumultuous life and the result will probably be pleasantly surprising. Note to self: kindness takes some effort! 2) Try coaching rather than yelling. Our children steal more with their eyes and ears than we can imagine. A little encouragement and coaching go MUCH farther than yelling and screaming. 3) Remember the good old days. We were each at one time the age of our children. We forget that too oftenwhen our kids err in judgment; it might not be a bad idea to remember the good old dayswhen we were in their shoes. This generation is not any more going directly to hell with MTV than we were with Elvis. 4) Set an example. From the pizza delivery boy to the principal of the school, show that respect and kindness is applied to every person at every level. Booker T. Washington said When we can teach our children that it takes as much dignity to till a field as to write a poem, then we will achieve. 5) Keep the lights on. As long as our kids know that we love them, they are going to be okay. Its okay to hate the sin, but love the sinner. Let our children know that we love them in spite of their errors, and that they are always safe in the warmth of home. This is the essence of kindness. Kindness is on the comeback. In every profession and industry, examples of leaders who practice patience and kindness are standing out. Ask any student, athlete, soldier, employee, or friendwho would you rather your leader be, with all things being equal? Bad-ass or kind? Youll get your answer. It is cool to be kind. Tips On Burning Calories Effectively Through Increasing Physical Activity

Thursday, June 19th, 2008

By Lee Dobbins The calorie your body burns greatly depends on your weight, on the activities that you do and on the level of intensity of your activity or exercising. Metabolic Rate refers to the rate your body burns calories. If you consume 2,500 calories per day, and also burns up 2,500 calories per day, then your body will remain at your same present weight. However, if you consume 2,500 calories per day but only burn 2,000 calories, then for sure, you will gain more weight, of approximately 1 pound a week. This is the reason why some individuals do not get fat in spite of eating a lot junk food; because they burn what they eat. The American College of Sports Medicine suggests that by engaging in any physical activity at least 30 minutes a day three times a week is the most effective way to lose some weight. Aerobic exercises include activities like as running, walking, bicycling, dancing or swimming; these are activities that raise your heart rate. If you lessen or maintain the amount of food you eat and indulge in aerobic exercises, in a few weeks you can be a pound lighter. Not only aerobic exercises burn calories effectively, it also raises your body’s metabolism in order that you can burn calories efficiently at a greater or faster rate. Alternatively, dieting continuously lowers normally your metabolism so that you gain weight even if you eat fewer calories compared to the person not dieting but eating more calories. Here are tips on how to burn calories: 1. Do cardio or aerobic exercises. Aside from regularly doing your aerobic exercises, increase your physical activity any chance you get. For instance, try walking instead of riding your way to the grocery. Climb the stairs instead of using the elevator or escalator. Park your car further away from the store so that you can walk more and burn more calories. 2. Begin a weight-training exercise program either by yourself or with an instructor. Begin a complete body workout three or four times a week with 15 to 20 repetitions. Remember to frequently stretch your body improve blood circulation and your flexibility. Weight training can supply you with more muscles that will effectively help you to burn more fat even while sleeping. 3. Cut down on sugar. Excess sugar, is stored by the body as fat. 4. Eat vegetables. Eat plenty of vegetables in your daily diet as they are rich in fiber that will easily make you feel full and let you burn calories. 5. Drink at least eight glasses of water a day. Staying well hydrated is significant to having healthy skin and healthy immune system. 6. When hungry, snack on healthy stuff such as nuts, raisins, dried fruits and vegetables. It is very significant to frequently eat when you are attempting to lose weight or build muscles. Not eating or holding back your hunger will burn muscle off and trigger the body to put aside more fat. 7. Eat more protein. According to researchers, proteins help build more muscles and burn fat. Eating protein helps also to avoid muscle loss when dieting. 8. Yogurt can also help you effectively lose weight. A study recently conducted among overweight individuals who consumed three servings a day of yogurt twelve weeks lost about 22 percent more weight, about 61 percent more fat and approximately 81 percent more fat in the abdominals compared to those who consumed the same amount of calories not consuming yogurt. However make certain that you buy yogurt with no sugar added and contains real fruit. 9. Never believe what you read on food labels. Stop eating foods that are fat-free since most of these have hidden fake or synthetic fats called trans or hydrogenated fats , that can just hurt you even more than taking saturated ordinary fat. Above all, just eat foods in moderation and balance it with your daily activities. Over eating of any food can be more than what your body can utilize for energy, and will just be stored away as fat. Simply put, a balanced lifestyle is key to staying fit, thin and healthy. Balance your food intake to the activities that you do each day. The Holy Spirit and the End of the Age

Sunday, June 15th, 2008

By William Bell, Jr. Joel’s Prophecy of the Last Days Joel foresaw the coming of the Spirit in connection with the last days. (Joel 2:28-30) It is important to note that these were the last days of Israel and of the covenant that God made with them in Sinai. (Hebrews 1:1,2; 8:13) The coming of the Spirit signaled that the time of judgment had arrived. In the chapter following, Joel adds, “For behold in those days and at that time, when I bring back the captives of Judah and Jerusalem, I will also gather all nations, and bring them down to the Valley of Jehoshaphat; and I will enter into judgment with them there…(3:1,2) Peter Cites Joel’s Prophecy As A Warning of Impending Judgment On Pentecost following Christ’s resurrection, Peter described the events occurring on that day. There appeared cloven tongues like fire, a sound as of a rushing wind and eleven Galileans stood miracoulously speaking in dozens of foreign languages before a curious multitude of devout Jews. Quoting Joel (2:16-20), Peter warns the nation whose hands were still dripping with the blood of the Messiah, namely that judgment upon them would arrive in short order. The national message of warning urged by the apostles was, –repent! For those who did, salvation awaited. Particularly, they were to save themselves from that perverse generation, (Acts 2:40) i.e. the one upon whom Jesus predicted would come vengeance for all the righteous blood shed on the earth. (Matt. 23:34-38) The Spirit and the Parousia Jesus promised the Holy Spirit during the interim of his going to the Father. This was the time of longsuffering and encouragement to the nation to heed the message of repentance. (2 Peter 3:9) During his absence Jesus would not leave the disciples as orphans. In his place, he would send the Holy Spirit as a helper until his return. Through the signs, he worked with the apostles until the end of that age, Mark 16:20, Matthew 28:20. This time is however brief as Jesus referred to it as a “little while,” (John 16:16-19). Jesus’ coming, then at hand, (James 5:7,8) came in a very little while, (Hebrews 10:37), –a period of about 40 years. Jesus’ return marked the end of the eschatological Spirit in the last days. No longer is he absent, but once again present with the church, not in humiliation, but in his glory, as Lord of lords and King of kings (2 Corinthians 5:8; 1 Timothy 6:14, 15). How You Can Pick Up a Woman in the Rain

Saturday, June 7th, 2008

By Scott Patterson In many situations, there are specific techniques you can use to pick up women. Whether it’s a certain place or certain environment, a guy should always be prepared to approach a woman. This includes inclement weather. Here’s an example The other day I was driving in the rain and stopped at light. Looking over to the right, I noticed something interesting On the sidewalk was a woman who was getting completely soaked from the rain coming pouring down on her. While she looked like a drowned rat, you could tell she was a really attractive woman. In the few seconds I was watching this woman I say a guy walk up to her. Without saying a word, he chivalrously puts his umbrella over her head and protects her from the rain. Observing their body language, you could tell that the two of them had never met him before. The funny thing is this woman didn’t hesitate or pull away when he did this action. In fact, he said something funny and they walked away laughing together huddled under the umbrella. Now I imagine he probably used this technique to show he was thoughtful guy who takes initiative. Furthermore, he probably got her number and set up a date. And You can try the same pick up technique. By using the rain/umbrella, you’ll show a level of chivalry and class which many guys have forgotten. So next time it’s raining out, look for a woman who is getting soaked, then try this technique. If you can approach her in a non-threatening way, you should easily grab her number and set up a date. Confident Weight Loss - How to Improve Your Success at Losing Weight

Sunday, June 1st, 2008

By Janice Elizabeth Small Did you know that lack of confidence and low self-esteem are two of the biggest threats to success when it comes to making positive changes to your health and looks? The thing is if you don’t value yourself enough you will never make the effort to break the habits which are making you unhealthy and overweight. If you feel sub-consciously that you are not worth it, you will quickly give up any serious attempt at weight loss and will carry on eating too much or not taking exercise because you feel, deep down, your current state is all you deserve. But is being overweight and unfit good enough for you? Of course it’s not. We ALL deserve to enjoy good health, fitness and a weight which suits our height and build. Why would anyone deserve any less? But, if you are not as healthy and slim as you’d like to be and you are not doing everything in your power to change that situation then evidently you do not think that you are worth the effort. It’s a sobering thought isn’t it? Maybe you thought your lack of confidence and self-esteem was due to not being in shape - if only you were thinner you imagine you would feel better about yourself. And chances are you will feel better. But you will only get there if you start to feel worthy in the first place! So how to you go about getting that elusive confidence and self-esteem when you don’t have enough? Of course this subject could fill a whole book and we can’t cover everything in this article but here are three useful tips to get you started and which will go a long way towards increasing your confidence and self-esteem as well as helping you lose weight. 1. Success in Small Steps Success breeds success they say. Yet what do we do but set ourselves up for failure time after time by taking on grandiose plans to change our lives in one fell swoop. And of course we don’t succeed. It’s too much too soon. And each failure strikes another blow at our self esteem. Change is difficult for everyone so give yourself the best possible chance of success by making changes one step at a time. And if you do fall by the wayside now and again remind yourself that you are a human not a robot and it’s perfectly Ok to take two steps forward and one step back. As long as you are learning from your mistakes, you can still hold your head high. 2. Act as If Treat yourself and behave as if you had already arrived at your target weight and level of fitness. Take care of your body. Look after your hair and skin. Wear clothes which fit. Look the world in the eye and smile (even if you’re shaking inside). You’ll be amazed at how the world will respond - you are showing that you value and respect yourself and the world will treat you accordingly - with the respect and consideration you give yourself. 3. Be Clear Be clear about what you want for yourself - if you do not know you can easily waver from your goal. And once you have set your sights firmly on what you want make it clear to others by your words and actions that you mean business. It’s when you say you want to lose weight and then don’t follow through that people feel free to sabotage your efforts by trying to get you to eat all sorts of things you can do without and to skip your work-outs. They treat your efforts as a joke because you do! If you are clear and firm with them and you follow through with your actions they are more likely to back off and let you do as you wish after a while. They will see you are serious this time and will respect you more for it. Be clear about what you want and act as if you mean it. These three steps will create a confidence cycle which will make all the difference to your weight loss efforts. The more you do them the more confident you feel and the more confident you feel the more success you will have. Know in your heart of hearts you deserve to achieve the shape and fitness level you want - because you do!
