Interactivity, the hallmark of computing technology, fundamentally calls into question the viability of a model based on being able to force people to watch, listen, and read, advertising. The real problem I think is that our entire system for valuing advertising is completely wrong. In almost every major medium the basic measurement for value is the cost per thousand as measured by an acceptable accounting company. Maybe that is because it is virtually impossible to generate any interest for payment by results, because there is no clear way to make such measurements i.e. establishing any sales increase is as a result, exclusively, of advertising. The supposedly reliable benchmarks of Old Media were actually just mutually agreed upon illusions. No one really expected that by paying 35 for each thousand viewers/readers that it would actually get all those people to read/view its ad. So perhaps, after all advertising isnt dead, but the way we measure its true value is going to be radically different in the future. Additionally many people in the industry think that the net effect of all the changes occurring is that it will be all to easy to avoid advertising. But because TV is such a powerful medium, we will find ways to cut through, to persuade people that its worth seeing the commercials, maybe even paying them to do so! Some people within the industry think that the customer (which after all is king/queen) is heartily sick of having completely non-interactive ads shoved down their throats. However in the digital age content will still be king and competition for major programming rights are bound to escalate. Additionally digital TV is bound to affect viewing figures, and therefor advertising communication (one-way communication?) is the big question. There are certain incontrovertible facts: viewing will fragment, and it will become more expensive to reach mass audiences.As a result of all this, inevitably the quality of programming on certain channels will decline, but viewers will simply vote with their remote controls. On the other hand, conducting your job search in an organized manner will reduce the amount of time you spend looking for information, following inappropriate leads, or waiting for your dream job to fall into your lap. It generally takes at least a month to find an entry-level job, and as much as nine months for one requiring a high level of skill and experience. Getting organized before you begin your job search can ultimately save you a lot of time and frustration. You should take several preliminary steps before you even begin your active job search. You should start by identifying your skills, interests, target market, and any child care, transportation, or other issues that you will need to keep in mind. A career or employment counselor can be very helpful in this area, as well as with the preparation of your resume, cover letters, and any other job search materials you will need. Once youre ready to face the job market, there are three areas where youll find it beneficial to be well organized: your schedule, your workspace, and your contacts. It will also allow you to find easily any other information you may have gathered about the organization before your interview. You may find it beneficial to have an alternate job search office such as your local library or employment centre, where you can research, read, and write without the distractions you may encounter at home. If you plan to use this type of service on a regular basis, youll need some type of portfolio or briefcase to hold your job search material, including your resume in printed form and on a diskette, your calendar, and a notebook for jotting down leads and ideas. Of course, youll need a calendar for marking down job interviews and other important meetings. Youll also need a system for keeping track of your job applications. Your Contacts During your job search, you will probably communicate with hundreds, if not thousands, of people, but in order to make effective use of the network you develop, youll need a way to keep track of all your contacts. The simplest method is a card file system, with a card for each contact. Each card should include the contacts name, title, organization, address, telephone number, fax, and email address, the source of the lead, and dates and details of any conversations, correspondence, or interviews. You may find it helpful to set up a recipe box with a set of dividers labeled with the days of the week and a set numbered 1-31 for the days of the month. You can file each card under the date you wish to contact that person. For example, you may speak with someone on the 10th who suggests that you call him or her in two weeks. After noting the information on the index card, file it in the section for the 25th where it will serve as a reminder for you to follow up. There are wonderful software programs available that can help you with organizing your job search contacts. The key features of any organizational system are ease of recording and ease of retrieval. If using an electronic system will make your job search more complicated and time-consuming, dont use it. Job searching can be overwhelming, but when you organize your schedule, workspace, and contacts effectively, youll be able to stay on track and find your new job more quickly. By Douglas Bower I’ve really only had two friends in my life. Now, before you deem this too pathetic for words, let me define terms. A friend, a real friend, is one who engages, no matter what. A genuine friend, a pal, a buddy, will not let too much time pass without contacting you to check in. A true friend keeps you in mind and even if you live on the other side of the country or globe, does what it takes to keep in touch. A phone call, an e-mail, a text message, or God forbid, an old fashioned handwritten letter, are what a real friend uses to keep engaged. Even if it’s nothing more than a, “I can’t talk long but I wanted to tell you I’ve been thinking of you lately.” Real friends do this. My real friends have been my beloved wife, Cindi, and my friend, Mark. They’ve bothered to engage me for decades. I met Mark when we were 14 years old and stayed friends all these years. I am now fifty-one. We met in our first year of high school and remained bosom buddies and lifelong pals. We did everything together and were soon known in our high school and college as “Lucy and Ethel,” or “Laverne and Shirley.” We were closer than just friends. Mark became my brother. I moved in with Mark and his family while I was still in high school. My parents moved to the east coast but I wanted to stay in Kansas City to finish my last year of high school. We roomed together through college and up to the very day I married my wifemy other best friend. Mark was the best man in my wedding. Even after marrying Cindi, Mark remained OUR best friend. We engaged constantly and without fail. Even when Mark moved to El Paso to become an Assistant U.S. Attorney, we still engaged. Cindi and I from Kansas and Mark in Texas stayed engaged, no matter what. We called, we emailed, and we took vacations to see one another. We made no demands on one another. We just engaged. Today I only have one real friend left. Mark left us. He had to go. On Easter Sunday evening, 2004, at 7:45 p.m., Mark died of kidney cancer. I loved my friend Mark and miss him almost more than I can express. It’s taken this long, until 2006, to be able to write anything about this unbearable loss without breaking down. I can barely, even still, fathom a world without Mark in it. But, he’s gone. We cannot engage. I do know many people. I have an incredible number of acquaintances. But of all those acquaintances, none offered so much as an e-mail, a phone call, or a letter when Mark died. Even today, they never engage. I had only one real friend who offered comfort when Mark passed awaymy beloved wife. I wonder how much Americans have become nothing more than a nation of acquaintances instead of engaging friends? Do Americans even bother anymore to engage? Or has real, genuine, and true friendship become nothing more than a series of “one-night stands,” as sex became in the so-called sexual revolution of the sixties? By Steve Robbins Curtis Sledge and Mike Hammer are good friends who love to fly fish. They have been on many fly fishing trips including several misadventures. For example, one summer day Mike, Curtis and this cute young blonde in a brown bikini went fly fishing the coast for redfish. As usual, Mike has a little too much to drink. He gets up to get another beer, loses his balance and falls out of the boat. The young blonde says, What should we do?” Curtis says, “You better jump in after him, he’s been under water for a while, he might need some help.” So she jumps in, and after some time, she surfaces. She says, “Curtis, help me get him in the boat.” They wrestle Mike back into the boat (he is a big ol boy you know). The girls says, “Oh no… what do we do now, it doesn’t look like he’s breathing.” Curtis says, “You’d better give him mouth to mouth, cuz I sure aint” So she then puts her mouth over Mik’es mouth and starts to blow air into into his cold body. They decided to wait until morning to fish. So, after their tent was all set up, they crawled in and fell sound asleep. A few hours later, Mike wakes up. He then wakes up Curtis and says, “Hey wader breath, look towards the sky and tell me what you see?” Curtis replies, “I see millions of stars.” “OK What does that tell you?” asked Mike. Curtis ponders for a minute, and then says, “Astronomically speaking, it tells me there are millions of galaxies and potentially millions of planets. Astrologically, it tells me that Saturn is in Leo. Time wise, it appears to be approximately a quarter past two in the morning. Theologically, it’s evident the Lord is all-powerful and we are small and insignificant. Meteorologically, it seems we will have a beautiful day tomorrow. Curtis then asks, What’s it tell you, Mike?” Mike is silent for a moment, then says, “Curtis, you idiot. Someone stole our tent.” The following year, Mike and Curtis go on another fly fishing and camping trip. They pack a cooler with sandwiches and beer lots of beer. After five hours of hiking, and dragging that cooler, they arrive at a great spot. Its a nice level campsite next to a pristine trout stream. As they began to set up camp, they realize theyve forgotten a bottle opener. Curtis turns to Mike and says, “Youve gotta go back and get the opener or else we have no beer.” “No way,” says Mike. “By the time I get back, you will have eaten all the food.” (Remember these are two pretty big ol boys) “I promise I wont,” says Curtis. “Just hurry!” So Mike leaves. Curtis keeps his word. Three full days pass and theres still no sign of Mike. Exasperated and starving, Curtis finally digs into the sandwiches. Suddenly, Mike pops out from behind a rock and yells, “I knew it! That settles it Im not going!” Two years ago, Mike and Curtis decided that they wanted to fly fish the Alaskan wilderness again this year. They got a pilot to fly them into the far north to one of the best Alaskan trout streams. They were quite successful in their venture and kept a huge amount of fish. The pilot came back, as arranged, to pick them up. They started loading their gear into the plane, including the many large bags of fish. But the pilot objected and said, “My plane can only handle a certain amount of weight. You two are pretty big ol boys so with all of your gear and all that fish I’m afraid the plane cant handle it.” He then said “You can only load two bags of fish… you will have to leave the rest behind for the bears.” Mike and Curtis both argued with the pilot. Mike said, “the year before we kept this many fish and the pilot allowed us to put them all on board.” “Yea and the plane was the same model and capacity as this one” said Curtis. Reluctantly, the pilot finally permitted them to put all the fish on board. But when they attempted to take off, and leave the valley, the little plane could not make it and they crashed into the wilderness. Climbing out of the wreckage, Mike asked Curtis, “Do you know where we are?” “I think so,” replied Curtis. “I think this is about the same place where we crashed last year!” Finally, a short while ago, Mike and Curtis were fishing their special creek off the beaten track. The stream was loaded with Brookies and they were slamming dry flies all day long. This was dry fly fishing at its best. Mike and Curtis were having the time of there lives when suddenly, out of the bushes, jumped the Game Warden!!! Immediately, Mike threw down his fly rod and started running through the woods as fast as he could go. Now this was a site to see remember, Mike is a pretty big ol boy. He was thrashing through the brush like an ape gone wild and hot on his heels came the Game Warden.
