By John Follis When you hear the word marketing what comes to mind? More business or wasted money? If your experience with marketing or advertising has been less than positive your cynicism may be well founded. Yet, have you ever noticed a competitor with a mediocre product and a healthy business? The difference is often marketing. Some say theyve never done marketing and dont need to because of good word- of-mouth. Positive word-of-mouth is great, but not enough if youre serious about growing your business. Others do invest in marketing yet treat it as a necessary evil. The problem with that mindset is that its driving with the brakes on. Those people sabotage their efforts by making poor decisions, taking half-measures and often resisting anything innovative. When asked about the one big key to marketing success I reply that theres nothing more important than a marketing mindset. A marketing mindset is an attitude, a way of thinking, that values and embraces the power of marketing. If you look at the companies and brands that are most successful — Nike, Microsoft, Virgin, Trump, Saturn, Kenneth Cole, etc — youll find someone at the top with a marketing mindset. People like Trump, Cole, and Virgins Richard Branson may have it instinctively. For most, however, its a learned attribute. So, if you dont have a marketing mindset yet, keep reading and start to get one. Follis Fact #1 You need a Marketing Mindset. Attracting vs. Chasing A guy sees a beautiful woman in a bar, tracks down her name and number, calls her up and says, “Hi, my name is Joe and Im great in bed.” Thats cold calling. Another guy sees a beautiful woman in a bar and gives her a napkin that says, “Im Bill and Im great in bed.” Thats direct marketing. A third guy sees a beautiful woman in a bar, has his ex-girlfriend go up to her and say, “See that cute guy over there? Hes my ex, his name is Tom, and hes really great in bed.” Thats PR. Last guy walks into a bar, a beautiful woman approaches him and says, “Hi, my name is Courtney and I hear youre really great in bed.” Thats effective marketing. Attraction is the essence of marketing. When you create enough desire to get your prospect to come to you, theyll always be more predisposed to buying. That bares repeating. When you create enough desire to get your prospect to come to you, theyll always be more predisposed to buying. The challenge, of course, is that your prospect is elusive prey. So, imagine the first rabbit hunters. Theyd exhaust themselves using spears and rocks until a more evolved Neanderthal got the idea of using carrots. Or, imagine the girl who desperately wants a date, but cant understand why she scares guys away when she chases them. Unfortunately, too many businesses act like that girl chasing for a date by putting lots into selling and nothing into marketing. Follis Fact #2 Its always better to attract than chase. Expense vs Investment Those who dont understand marketing view it as an expense. Those with a marketing mindset know its an investment. They know that, if done right, it can excite their prospects and produce a great return. Done right means well- researched, well-managed, and generally handled by someone who knows what theyre doing. Regarding expense, being a small business is a bad excuse to do nothing. Start small, but do something. There are plenty of cost-effective, non- traditional ways to do a test. So, if you want to grow, you cant afford not to develop a marketing plan. Determine your Objective and Budget Like building a house it starts with a solid foundation. Start with a clear objective. The more specific you make it, the better you can develop an effective plan to achieve it. If your company has no marketing director to create a plan, get help. A marketing plan is critical and it involves the analysis of key market factors such as: the nature and traits of your product. the exact audience youre targeting. the competitive environment. the traits of your industry/category. the maturity of your business. timing. Your marketing budget depends upon the analysis of these factors as well as your short and long term objectives. For some businesses, 5% of annual sales is plenty to invest. For others, 10% may not be enough. Once the marketing goal is determined it’s easier to determine the budget needed to achieve it. Have a Great Product At the risk of stating the obvious, a big key for marketing success is having a great product. In his best-selling book, Purple Cow, marketing guru Seth Godin calls it, “being remarkable.” Its about having a product or service thats exceptional. Though many non-remarkable products may seem to do well because of great marketing, no long-term success can be achieved without a great product. In fact, if a product is not great, great marketing will usually make it fail faster. People will buy it, not like it, and never buy it again. Case in point: Ever see an exciting teaser for an upcoming movie? It can make a lot of people run out and buy a ticket. The problem starts a couple of weeks later when folks see the movie, hate it, and then spread the word. Before you know it, the movies gone. Heres another case. Remember New Coke? If not, youre not alone. It didnt last long. Despite the marketing muscle that Coke put behind it, the Coke- drinking public decided they were quite happy with the old Coke. Another case involves a new tropical hotel. Eager to jump-start his business the owner got tour directors and travel writers to check it out and hopefully generate some good buzz. Problem was, the hotel wasnt finished. Had he waited a couple more months he wouldve gotten great reviews. Now hell be lucky if those tour directors and writers give him another shot. If businesses spent less energy trying to sell their product and more on improving it, theyd have more success in the long run. Follis Fact #3 Great marketing will make a bad product fail faster. When product, client, and marketing are all exceptional the results can be a beautiful thing — even if it doesnt start off that way. “Let me get this straight…you want my commercial to start with my competitor’s tagline?” That was the company president’s response when I presented the concept. I guess I couldn’t blame him. Recommending that he put $350,000 behind a TV spot that began with his main competitors tagline may not have seemed like the smartest idea. Yet, I knew my concept was strong — if I could articulate it. But, before I continue, let me step back and explain the scenario. Sorrell Ridge Fruit Spreads was an unknown all-natural spreadable fruit” product (ie. jam) that had been selling in health food stores. Now, the tiny brand was ready to battle the big guys on the grocery shelves of America. The main competitor and undisputed leader in the category was Smucker’s. Smucker’s had a 30-year history during which it built one of the strongest, most positive brand images in history. Their tagline, “With a name like Smucker’s it has to be good”, was famous and endeared by the American public. What’s more, their ad budget was about 20 times that of tiny Sorrell Ridge. To say we needed a kick-ass campaign is an understatement. But Smucker’s was vulnerable. Their preserves were mostly high fructose corn syrup, refined sugar, and little fruit. Sorrell Ridge, on the other hand, was all fruit. It was a big competitive difference and the stage was set for a classic David vs. Goliath battle. So, back to our meeting… “You want my commercial to start with my competitor’s tagline?” “The idea here isn’t to promote Smucker’s tagline, it’s to dismantle it,” I replied passionately. The president’s eyebrows raised. I then walked him through the simple 30-second TV spot which opened with the Smucker’s tagline filling the screen… With a name like Smucker’s it has to be good. The announcer began: “For 30 years Smucker’s has been telling us they have to be good. But in fact, Smucker’s Preserves is mostly corn syrup, refined sugar, and only some fruit.” At the mention of each ingredient a pair of hands popped up from the bottom of the TV screen and patched over the last line of type, “it has to be good,” with a succession of modifications starting with “it’s probably good”, to “it might be good,” and finally, “is it really so good?” We then cut to the Sorrell Ridge jar as the announcer explained that “Sorrell Ridge is 100% fruit.” The final stake in the heart was our tagline which played directly off Smucker’s: Sorrell Ridge. With 100% fruit, it has to be better. Holding my breath, I glance over at the Sorrell Ridge president who now looked like a kid on Christmas morning. I then presented a “50 cents off” coupon ad with side- by-side visuals of each jar positioned under their respective tagline. Like the TV, it was simple, but compelling, and he loved it. But now came the legal questions. Could we even do it? After some nail-biting delays, and a few minor copy changes, the lawyers gave us the green light. But not without stern warnings that there was no guarantee that Smucker’s wouldn’t sue. To the president’s credit, he pulled the trigger on the campaign and we held our breath. We didn’t have to hold it long. Sales spiked and within the month were up a full 90%. Our thrilled client immediately doubled his media spending by scraping together every dime he could muster. When the dust finally settled 12 months later, Sorrell Ridge had a 50% national increase while sales for the entire jams category increased only 3.5%. The Harvard Business Review wrote it up as a case study and Forbes wrote it up as a 2-page feature. My partner and I got covered in a dozen trade publications and appeared live on CNBC. And, despite all our legal fears, Smucker’s never did take action. Everything we said was true and obviously Smucker’s knew it. Though they probably couldve tied us up in court, the last thing they needed was more press. We simply had a better product and we got the message across in an exciting way. As much as you deal out your hypocrisy and judgment, so My Son Jesus will sow it back into your lap, and it will flow out over your lap. Your cup will be filled with exactly what you sow. If you sow to your flesh in your flesh you will reap corruption. If you sow to life and to the Spirit you will reap everlasting life! If you love the world and your riches and love to disobey My Son’s Words, you will be judged by the world and you will lose your riches and you will go to hell because My Son’s words will judge you on the last day! My prophetic warning isn’t very positive is it? Many of you will discount this word of prophecy as it will not line up with what a New Covenant prophet is meant to bring to you! Many of you will take this to your wolves in sheep’s clothing and ask them if it is Me the LORD speaking here or just the mad words of an out of balance prophet! You are not sheep, you have denied the brethren in your pride and for your pride you will reap corruption to your souls. Repent and weep and mourn and begin to walk in My Son’s commands. You are going to lose your eternal life if you don’t watch it! If you are sinning, you need to stop! Repent therefore you double minded. Leave the harlot and flee Babylon. Sell all you have and sow it into the third world and I will save your soul. For what good is it that you inherit the whole world and lose your own soul? If you don’t obey My Son Jesus who lost His life for you, if you don’t walk in holiness and in love for all men, you will die and go to hell, you can depend on it! If this Word gets to you and you are feeling convicted, then it has done it’s job. Simply repent and turn from your error into the light of the Truth. Then you can do Me a favor and send this to everyone you know so they too can benefit. If you don’t like this Word and don’t think it is from God, ask your pastor what he thinks of it before you dismiss it. Make a study of all the scripture in this message, take out the words that are in black and see if your really are a doer of that scripture or you need to change to obey it. Then change and obey! If your church is out of order you need to find a little one perhaps that is small because they preach holiness and to be set apart and denying the flesh. It is hard to leave a church, but I am telling you that even a little leaven can spoil the whole lump. See that you are not being seduced by lies and led astray. They are presumptuous, self-willed. They are not afraid to speak evil of dignitaries, 11 whereas angels, who are greater in power and might, do not bring a reviling accusation against them before the Lord. 12 But these, like natural brute beasts made to be caught and destroyed, speak evil of the things they do not understand, and will utterly perish in their own corruption, 13 and will receive the wages of unrighteousness, as those who count it pleasure to carouse in the daytime. They are spots and blemishes, carousing in their own deceptions while they feast with you, 14 having eyes full of adultery and that cannot cease from sin, enticing unstable souls.( they say you can love the world and love all your riches and have pleasure and leisure in this world and disobey Jesus and Me the Father and they teach from pulpits that it is impossible to be Holy, set apart from the world and blameless, they teach that it’s okay to sin as often as you wish and preach that one can’t stop sinning through true repentance) They have a heart trained in covetous practices, and are accursed children. 15 They have forsaken the right way and gone astray,( they not only disobey Jesus’ commands, but they have clever excuses that they teach people why we need not obey what Jesus taught, such as don’t give a drunk money for a drink but buy him a meal, then they don’t even buy him a meal, they think they do well inviting rich friends to 21st birthday parties, but won’t invite the poor and sick like My Son taught they should for example) following the way of Balaam the son of Beor, who loved the wages of unrighteousness;(Their false prophets speak of peace, prosperity and blessing and you pay then big love offerings or pay to attend the conferences and are encouraged to partner with them and their madness) 16 but he was rebuked for his iniquity: a dumb donkey speaking with a mans voice restrained the madness of the prophet. 17 These are wells without water, cloud carried by a tempest, for whom is reserved the blackness of darkness forever. One of the most interesting features of this fish is the actual speckled trout fishing you will get to do. And, when you do hook the speckled trout, you will be surprised with the trout’s ability to thrash and fight you on the way out. For many, a speckled trout fishing trip may be something that you are interested in doing as well. Speckled trout are also called by other names including the spotted sea trout, specks, yellow-mouths, and paper mouths. They are usually about 14-18 inches long and weigh between one and three pounds. The speckled trout can be found in shallow but muddy bottoms, mostly coastal areas as well. They can be found though out the entire gulf coast in the United States. They are silver with olive green on the back and many small black dots throughout the body. The lower jaw is larger then the upper. So, if you are interested in finding the speckled trout, what are you going to do? You want to take a speckled trout fishing trip as well as enjoy some beautiful scenery. It doesn’t have to be too close to home either. You can go speckled trout fishing near the Gulf of Mexico. One of the best locations is Louisiana, although there are several areas along the coast that will provide for you as well. The area is abundant with the speckled trout. To make your trip enjoyable, you may want to book a retreat or guided tour of the area. That way, you will learn where the speckled trout are and what to use to lure them in from experts who have fished the area for years. By Wayne Potter Making your own homemade Herbal oils is a great homemade skin care ingredient project because there is very little needed to get started. So if you have some left over canning jars lets make some herbal oils. All you will need is: Your herbs or flowers Carrier oil Canning jars 6 oz and 12oz Store in colored bottles We will start using the “Hot Method” using the stove to make our homemade herbal oils. There is a “Cold Method” which is not really cold because you will be using the sun. The cold method takes months on a shelf letting the sun do it’s magic. I have only worked with the hot method and look forward to trying it next summer. Start by taking the flower peddles or herbs and rub them between your thumb and pointing finger to wrinkle them up. This will help extract as much active plantmaterial as possible. Make sure there is no water on the peddles of the flowers or herbs this may lead to spoiling. I make this as if I were canning tomatoes. In one stock pot a place a wire grate at the bottom of the pan with 6 12oz canning jar or you can use Pyrex measuring cup inside. This way you can make up to six different types although I usually only make up two or three different types. In the 12 oz canning jar put herbs or flowers in. Only fill two thirds full then cover with 6oz of your carrier oil. Leaver some room at the top so you will not have to worry about spilling it when you bring it out of the water. Fill the stock pot up with water so that it is haft way up the jar . If they startto float there is too much water and you will have to ladle some out. Bring the water up to a simmer and let the herbal oil stay in there for 2 to 3 hours. This is best done when you know you are going to be in and out of the kitchen. You will need to ad water to the pan from time to time, if you don’t it will run dry!! In another stock pot I put in six 6 oz canning jars and heat them up as if you were canning. Make sure they are dry, then pour your oil through a fine mesh strainer into your canning jars and put the lid on. I like when the top seals but if it does not it will be ok. What you will want to look for is a layered look to the oil. At the bottom if you see a watery layer this will need to be separated and discarded. This This water will make your oil Spoil. I wait and see, giving it a day or two, then putthe oil into smaller colored bottles. If it does not happen I can wait and do it latter. To make sure this does not happen use dried herds, but I use fresh even thoughit can be more work for a homemade herbal oil. If the oils are going to be used for the bath I will use Sunflower oil or Grapeseed oils as the base oil. For body butter, lip balms I use Jojoba, Almond, or Extra Virgin Olive oil. Now the hard part what to put in the oil. Here are just a few of the many plantsthat you can use. Chamomile, Eucalyptus, Rose, lavender, Comfrey. You may want to look for plants to grow this spring in your garden. One tip for your oils. By Nancy Wasson As an experienced counselor, one of the questions Im asked frequently is, Can a marital separation ever save a marriage? My answer is a qualified yes. Sometimes a couple is miserable living together and cant seem to co-exist without having constant harping and bickering. If they have children, they may worry about the impact on them of all the fighting. Each spouse wants the marriage to work and is willing to work on the problems and issues in marriage counseling while theyre separated. Couples in this situation often plan to use the separation period to let the dust settle, reflect on the marriage, take responsibility for their share of what has happened, and work on individual and joint issues in counseling. One goal is for the spouses to use their problem-solving skills in counseling to address and resolve the most serious problems before moving back together. Both spouses agree not to date anyone else and to focus exclusively on working to improve the marriage. For these couples, the separation can be a time to think, to reflect, to analyze, to cool off and calm down, and to take a break from each other. It also provides time and space for each spouse to make unhurried, thoughtful decisions instead of waiting for things to blow up and then impulsively leaving. Used in this way, a planned separation can actually help to save a marriage. In other cases, one spouse or the other may move out on the spur of the moment after an upsetting argument. The separation is unplanned, and there are no plans for marriage counseling, no guidelines agreed upon about seeing others, and no tentative time-line for the separation. There is usually much anxiety on the part of the partner who has been left unexpectedly and there are many unanswered questions: What is happening? Will the partner file for divorce? Will the marriage survive? Whether the separation will help or hurt the marriage is unknown in this case. Things could go either way, depending on what happens. Another situation that can result in separation is when a spouse is living in an intolerable situation in the marriage. Perhaps the partner is verbally abusive, chronically runs around, or shows continual disrespect towards his or her spouse in some other way. The spouse may have tried to get the partner to go to counseling, but the partner always refused. Sometimes the best thing the spouse can do is to decide to separate and hope that the partner will be shocked enough by the unexpected action to finally agree to work on the marriage. In situations like this, a separation can sometimes save the marriage. The partner often says, I knew we had some problems, but I didnt think they were that serious. I never thought she (or he) would really leave. She kept telling me, but I didnt believe her. The spouse then has to stand firm and let the partner know that she is going to live separately because I refuse to be in a marriage where Im treated like this. I deserve more. By not rushing to file for divorce, the spouse finds out during the planned separation if the partner is finally motivated enough to enter counseling and work on changing. If the couple enters counseling, the therapist will then be able to give them a recommendation about when they are ready to live together again, if ever. Of course, there are no guarantees in a marital separation. The separation might be instrumental in saving the marriage, or it may widen the gap between the two spouses and eventually lead to divorce. A planned separation is always preferable to an impulsive one. The following five tips can help you if you need to think about separating from your spouse: 1. Talk with your spouse about what your individual goals are for the separation. Are they the same or different? 2. Try to reach agreement that neither of you will date anyone else during this period of time. If your marriage is going to have the best chance possible, youll want to agree not to have sexual entanglements with others so you can continue to work on your relationship. 3. Set a tentative time period for the separation, such as three months. At the end of that time, you can both re-evaluate the decision in terms of whats best for each of you. 4. Agree to seek individual and joint counseling during the separation to address the key problems and issues that have caused conflict in the marriage. This is an ideal time to do some deep individual work on your own personal issues as well as to address core relationship issues. 5. Set guidelines that you both agree to about how much contact youll have during the separation and what kind of contact it will be. It doesnt do any good to have a separation if one spouse or the other is calling on the phone every five minutes and constantly wanting to talk more about the problems. A new study in the March issue of the International Journal of Obesity concludes that green tea extract increases the burning of calories and fat needed to lose weight. Green Tea In Liquid Or Capsule May Aid In Weight Loss Previous animal studies showed that green tea extract increased thermogenesis, which is the generation of body heat that occurs as a result of normal digestion, absorption, and metabolization of food. In previous human studies, the authors showed that consumption of green tea increased thermogenesis as well as energy expenditure and fat loss in healthy men, suggesting that green tea in liquid or capsule form may be an effective way to aid weight loss. In the new study, conducted by Abdul Dulloo, from the Institute of Physiology at the University of Fribourg in Switzerland, researchers exposed a particular type of fatty tissue from rats to caffeine and to green tea extract containing small concentrations of caffeine. Green Tea Containing Caffeine Can Raise Metabolism Green tea containing caffeine significantly increased thermogenesis by 28% to 77%, depending on dose, whereas caffeine alone resulted in no significant increase. When the stimulant ephedrine was added to green tea with caffeine, the increase was even more significant compared with caffeine alone and ephedrine alone. Caffeine and ephedrine are used together in some herbal weight loss preparations, but there are many safety concerns regarding ephedrine because it raises heart rate and blood pressure. Dulloo and colleagues also tested the plant compound EGCG found in green tea. They found that the stimulant ephedrine alone had no effect on thermogenesis, but that caffeine plus ephedrine resulted in an 84% increase. However, adding EGCG to the caffeine plus ephedrine mix increased thermogenesis even further. “Our studies … raise the possibility that the therapeutic potential of the green tea extract, or indeed a combination of EGCG and caffeine, may be extended to the management of obesity,” Dulloo and co-authors write. A researcher who reviewed the study for WebMD says that while the work is interesting and extends this group’s previous findings by showing that compounds in green tea other than caffeine are involved in thermogenesis, caution should be used in interpreting animal data and applying it to humans. “They used [a particular type of fatty tissue] from rats and we don’t really know how significant that tissue is in humans or if it is different in obese vs. non-obese people,” says Sheri Zidenberg-Cherr, PhD. “It doesn’t rule out the significance of the findings, and it is a good model to use to look at the effects of caffeine and the combination of caffeine and the [plant] compounds that are present in green tea, but until better clinical trials are done in humans, it’s hard to say what the physiological significance of this actually may be.” Zidenberg-Cherr, who is an associate professor of nutrition at the University of California, Davis, also points out that thermogenesis plays only a very small role in energy expenditure in adults. Most of the energy expended is used to maintain basic body functions such as breathing and the flow of blood throughout the body.
