Devotional Thought - Trail of Ants

By Faithe Thomas While visiting with friends, I noticed a trail of ants marching through the maze of wicker and bamboo furniture. I wondered how each ant knew where the previous ant had been. I guessed that they, like Hansel and Gretel, left a trail to be followed. If so, their trail was not visible to human eyes. I decided to test my theory. I rubbed my finger across their path at one point and then waited to see what would happen. Sure enough, when the next ant came to that point, it was at a loss for which way to go! It spent some time wandering around until it discovered the other side of the trail. As another ant approached, it, too, was confused as to where to go, but it somehow managed to follow most of the wanderings of the previous ant and found the original trail again. I also walk on a path, one forged by Jesus Christ. Philippians 2:5-16 points me in the right direction. To follow Christ I must have the same attitudes that He had. I need to put others first by thinking of myself as their servant. Philippians 2:14-15 shows me how I stray from following Christ. When I grumble and complain my attitudes do not reflect those found in Christ. At that point, I have stopped imitating Him and stepped off the trail. That sin has the same result as my finger did when I rubbed it across the path of the ants. Paul encourages me in verse 16 to prove to be blameless and innocent, children of God above reproach in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you appear as lights in the world. Let’s face it, many hospitals are under staffed, making it harder for the nurses and doctors to perform all of their duties in a safe and practical manner. You need to have some say so in how your treatments are managed, especially when mistakes could cripple or even kill you or your loved one. You go to the hospital to get well not to get sick. Awareness of the problem is the key to defending yourself. Once you are aware, then you need to act. Act by gaining knowledge on how to protect yourself or your loved ones. You must know the basic methods for maintaining the proper care of your I.V. It all starts with proper hygiene. Proper handwashing is mandatory if we are to fight these infections. Do not, let any one at all come into your hospital room without first washing their hands. This must be done with an alcohol based cleanser or one approved by the hospital, and hands need to be washed for at least 30 seconds. This may sound like unnecessary precautions, but if it will keep you from extra days in the hospital or crippling side effects, it is worth it. Did I mention that you must take charge? Do not go to the hospital and feel intimidated. Who pays if you get an infection that makes you miss work, keeps you away from your family, keeps you from getting on with your life? You do, your employer does, your family suffers, insurance companies will raise rates to make up for the extra expenses, which means we all pay in the long run. Make your I.V. your lifeline not your deathline. Sterile technique must be used before and I.V. is installed and anytime it is accessed. Have your doctors and nurses write in your chart to use sterile techniques. Hang signs on your door telling all who enter to wash their hands first. These are very simple measures to insure that you get in, get out, get on with your life. Take charge now before it is too late. Your actions may reduce pain and suffering, and most of all may save a life. Arm yourself with the necessary weapons needed to fight infections. You open your favorite search engine and start looking for the “best weight loss program” or some “magic” pill that will make things much easier for you. You find tons of ads that offer you fast and effortless weight loss in few weeks or even days, and you think, “Wow, thats exactly what I am looking for.” Unfortunately, the chances of finding something that really works are minimal. Why? Because 99% of the weight loss systems or drugs you will find are either potentially dangerous for your health or pure marketing hype. Everybody likes to hear that losing weight is fast and easy, and nobody wants to hear it is a gradual process that requires some effort and discipline. So the self-claimed weight loss “experts” are giving to you exactly what you are looking for - a fast and easy solution for your problem. Unfortunately the easy way is not the way that will lead you to healthy and long-term results. If you want to learn how to detect the hype and the gimmicks you have to understand the basics of weight loss first. So lets start! Weight loss vs. fat loss First of all, lets consider the differences between both things: There are many ways to lose weight -losing water weight, losing muscle and bone weight, and losing body fat. In fact, it is very easy to lose “weight.” Just start exercising and reduce your water intake and you will lose several pounds in the first few days. When exercising, your body loses a lot of water and because you have stopped drinking liquids, you easily become dehydrated and you will weigh several pounds less. But is this is a long-term and healthy weight loss? Of course not. You will gain back the weight as soon as you restore your normal water intake. Here is another example: When you go on a diet and cut your calorie intake too much, your body detects the severe calorie deficit and slows down your metabolism. As a result, you stop losing fat (your reserve fuel), and start getting the energy you need from the muscle tissue. The result is decreased body weight, but unfortunately you have lost muscle instead of losing body fat. As you see, to achieve long-term, natural weight loss you need to burn as much fat as possible with the minimum lean body mass loss. How exactly fat is burned? If you are a healthy person, to successfully lose fat you only need to burn more calories than you eat (or drink) while maintaining your metabolism fast. Isnt it simple? In order to achieve this, your calories must come from the proper food sources, such as lean protein (chicken breast, egg whites, seafood, extra-lean red meat), complex carbs (oatmeal, brown rice, whole grains, vegetables, etc.) and “good” fats (olive oil, flaxseeds, fatty fish and cod liver oil). You should also add some kind of cardio exercise to your program, such as walking, jogging or cycling. Keep in mind that cardio is considered the best way to directly burn the fat. Lets look at an example: If you burn 2500 kCal and eat about 2000 kCal every day, that is a deficit of 500 kCal. There are 3500 kCal in 1 pound of fat. This means you will be burning 1 pound per week of pure body fat. Surprised? Yes, only 1 pound per week. I know “10 pounds in two days!” sounds much better, but that is far from realistic goal. Keep in mind that if you cut your calorie intake too much, you will slow down your metabolism, and this is not desirable if your goal is fat loss. This means that “Eat 500 kCal Burn 2500 kCal Lose 4 pounds per week” wont work for you. Its definitely possible to burn fat at faster rates (with proper nutrition and exercise program), even without supplements, but keep in mind that the maximum rate that is considered healthy is 2 pounds per week (if you are extremely overweight, up to 3 pounds per week is fine). Achieving healthy long-term weight loss faster is practically impossible. If you find products or nutrition plans that promise fast weight loss, they probably base their claims on dehydration. You can lose water weight really fast but this is not a real fat loss and can lead to serious health conditions. Conclusion You dont need a pill to lose weight. You dont need to starve yourself, to restrict the intake of any macronutrient, or to buy any “miracle” product. You just need to consume fewer calories than you burn, and those should come from good natural food sources. The best way to increase the amount of calories you burn and to create such calorie deficit is to exercise. Mild calorie restriction plus 30 to 40 minutes of intensive cardio exercise every day is the “magic formula” you are looking for and that will make you lose fat like never before. By Matthew Robert Payne Its a hard process writing for this ezine and putting my words down on a page that might one day be published in a book, This week I did a four part series on what life on earth would look on earth, according to what Paul wrote to Timothy. As I wrote about the sins listed I explained them. If I found it easy, it is because they all existed in my life from time to time, and after I posted the whole series I fell into a depression, knowing that I am a preacher whose own life is a mess. Sometimes I look at the story about the young rich ruler that met Jesus and I look at myself. Jesus rattled off a number of commandments and this guy answered that he had kept all of them from his youth. Guys I have to admit something; I never kept all the commandments that the guy had kept. But this guy had. If you are honest with yourself you have not kept them, and youll have to admit most of you would not sell all you own to possess Jesus like he hinted in the pearl collector parable, and the parable of the hidden treasurer in the field. I am a big sinner. I have no assets and I am poor. I am one person that could really use someone having pity on me, and I know when I read Scripture it does not make me feel good. Most often it makes me feel bad. The Scriptures strip me clean and the Holy Spirit draws me to repent in tears and convicts me to change. I have an enemy that I have a hard time to forgive. I have unresolved sins. I have idols that I give time to and less of my heart then goes to Jesus. I have films that I love more then Jesus. I have things that I do that if Jesus told me to give up I would struggle to give up. I am so full of sin that its a miracle that Jesus forgives me and even inspired me to write. I am tough on my readers and this comes from being tough on myself. I am guilty of much of what I preach and so can illustrate it. I am telling you all to change, when I do the same thing and I am a hypocrite. I am like a Pharisee of Jesus’ time, and yet I am better because on paper I am admitting it and Jesus is helping me. Dont freak out with what I suggest and what I preach online then. Dont look at my life as an example. Look to the message and let the Word of God convict you and go on and change. Jesus said for people to do what the Pharisees taught, but not to do what they did. The same goes for me, dont be as bad as me, and take my advice as I am writing it for myself more then for you. By Andrew Krause A lot of the cuisine of Italy can be intimidating, with multiple techniques used to produce a dish, expensive ingredients and complex construction. Many new cooks take a look at some of the more classic “gourmet” Italian recipes and decide such cooking is better left to Olive Garden or Macaroni Grill. This is a mistake, as there are plenty of easy Italian recipes around. In every ethnic cuisine, the basic cooking is simple. Remember that for most of human history, cooking tools were very simple and the availability of complex cooking tools was unknown. There was only heat, a simple pan or two and some basic ingredients. Take, for example, Shrimp Scampi, one of the most popular Italian restaurant dishes. Done right, it is a marvel of balance, with the richness of butter and the taste of garlic, green onions and white wine. Actually, it’s a very, very simple dish! You just saut the garlic and onions in olive oil, add the wine, then the butter, then the shrimp. It’s not hard at all, and the results are fantastic. Lasagna, believe it or not, is another amazingly simple dish. The layers can look intimidating in the finished product, but it’s basically just a matter of making simple meat and cheese mixtures, then ladling them into a dish in layers separated by noodles. The great thing about lasagna is that it’s fairly foolproof. Get your layers out of order? Forget to put the cheese in one layer? It really won’t matter all that much once everything’s baked together. And, for dessert, don’t forget the cannoli (hey, it was good enough for “The Godfather,” right?) You can buy cannoli shells at most bakeries, which removes what for most people is the tough part. The filling is simply a mixture of cheeses and flavorings which is then piped into the shells and decorated. You won’t believe how simple it can be! There are hundreds of easy Italian recipes out there. All you have to do is get cooking. By Patricia Nordman “Who is a God like you, who pardons sin and forgives the transgression of the remnant of his inheritance?” (Micah 7:18). How we crave to be forgiven by God and by man! Who is a God like this who suffers long with our sins and doubts? Who is this who withdraws the plumb line of judgment? “I will make justice the measuring line and righteousness the plumb line” (Isaiah 28:17). God’s people are made according to His standards, and we are expected to be true to these standards. But when we are tested, we are found to be out of plumb. We are not up to God’s measurements. “For the Son of Man came to seek and save what was lost” (Luke 19:10); “For I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners” (Matthew 9:13). Since we are all sinners, this means us. What hope this gives us! What a Friend we have in Jesus: “And here is how to measure it–the greatest love is shown when a person lays down his life for his friends” (John 15:13 TLB). This is the plumb line: love. “And I pray that you. . .may have power. . .to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge–that you may be filled with the measure of all the fullness of God” (Ephesians 3:17-19). Any friendship is measured by the depth of its affection in the sacrifices it makes and the burdens it bears. Jesus is indeed the Friend of humanity. Moses asked God to show him His glory; instead, God chose to show Moses His goodness (Exodus 33:18,19). “And he passed in front of Moses, proclaiming, `The Lord, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness, maintaining love to thousand, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin’” (Exodus 34:6,7).
